Don’t Lose Your Domain Name to a Shady Web Design Firm

Part of researching the right Website Design Company for your project is knowing what questions to ask. This article is addressing one simple but very important question to ask; who will own my domain name? Registering a domain name is one of the very first steps in the web design process and it is one of the most common services that is taken for granted. Any reputable web design firm will help you through all aspects of the website design process and explain to you the importance of each step. Here’s one point that many website design companies neglect to mention – whoever registers your domain name owns your domain name.

What does this mean for business owners? This means website owners beware! Register your own domain names!

I have been in the website design business for many years and have seen some pretty shady practices from several Web designers that include holding domain names hostage. I encourage all of my clients and all small business owners to register their domain names in their own names. It is of the utmost importance that the website owner has control over his or her domain name. By controlling your own domain name you can control who hosts your website and ultimately who has the right to maintain your website. Any legitimate website design firm would want their clients to be able to have control over their business information.

Many unsuspecting business owners simply assume that they have control over their website and are free to change hosting or web designers as they please. They certainly should be able to, however, I was inspired to write this short article or warning to business owners after receiving a surprising amount of phone calls recently from people who were being held hostage by their web designers. They were all similar situations where a web designer helped a client set up a site from scratch and everything seemed fine until the website owner wished to transfer hosting or change web designers only to find out that they could not. Finding out that your domain name is being held hostage for more money or out of spite can be devastating.

Here is a summary of one of the domain name horror stories that I recently encountered that illustrates the importance of owning your own domain name very clearly. A real-estate agent, we’ll call her Maggie, was working with a web designer for several years. This web designer then got her real estate license and became a competing real estate agent. Once the “web designer” became a real estate agent she no longer wanted to update and maintain Maggies’ website. Maggie also noticed that her website started falling from Google search results. Maggie came to my website design company to see if we could help her make some updates and regain her Google Search engine positioning.

Maggie was unhappy with her current web designer and wanted to move her hosting to a new hosting company when we initiated the work. Maggie, like many business owners, thought she could do whatever she wanted with her website. Unfortunately, there are people out there who scam, extort, and retaliate. Maggie was the victim of the latter. We were unable to make any headway with the former designer and had to advise the client to contact a lawyer. Unfortunately, this is often the only alternative and can be a tedious and costly process. Many people holding a domain name hostage will release it immediately when confronted with a letter from a lawyer, but there are always those willing to ride out the process to the bitter end.

My recommendation is to avoid any domain name complications that could derail your website from the beginning and register your domain name through a reputable registrar like GoDaddy. I personally recommend using GoDaddy as a registrar due to their exemplary customer service and streamlined processing. It only takes 5 minutes to set up. Having to fight for a domain name you spent years establishing a business with will certainly cost you much more.

Together they planned to build a clinic on his ancestral home on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. But women doctors in the year 1882 didn’t have many options and even fewer if they were widowed like she had been recently. Arriving in England to visit Elizabeth Blackwell, founder of the London Medical School for Woman, she is discouraged to find that the only real health care on the remote Isle of Skye will be herself, a few aging doctors as well as veterinary doctors. But she must build a clinic there to escape her memories and fulfill her late husband’s dream. Maggie goes by train and boat to the rather bleak Isle of Skye. The island is almost as barren as she feels and she isn’t sure if she can even fit in. Add the fact that her dead husband is haunting her with the request for her to fall in love again and she knows she’s losing her mind. But the people of Skye need herand she is determined not to let them down…but they are slow to accept a widowed woman doctor. Now if she were married againthat would be a different matterand her dead husband, Justin, knows just the right man for the job, Conall MacGryman, his childhood friend and cousin, a veterinary for the island. Now all Justin has to do is to convince Maggie to give the man a chance so she can fall in love againfor both their sakes.

Sometimes old flames burn the brightestFunny, sophisticated, and wise, this heartfelt book is a coming-of-middle-age story about girlfriends when you are no longer a girl, growing up when you are already grown, and the price you are willing to pay for love. Jillian Hunter treasures her independence. She has raised two sons by herself, launched a small business, and restored a tumbledown beach cottage in Connecticut. But when a trip to London reunites her with Colin—an old flame she hasn’t seen in 35 years—Jill falls for him all over again. But love makes Jill reckless and Colin isn’t quite the boy she remembers. She ends up risking everything she’s worked for—her business, her home, and her two closest friends—to make a life with him. And when she’s faced with the risk of losing Colin as well, Jill is forced to take an uncomfortably close look at the woman she’s allowed herself to become.

Maggie had spent a lifetime trying to win the love and affection of her father, but nothing seemed to work. Now he was asking her to seduce and marry one of two men that he had selected for her. But Maggie has other plans–with Alex and Patrick in ‘Maggie’s Menage’. Dana’s irritated when her boss slates her to accompany department bad boys, Christopher and Jason, to a meeting in London on her weekend off. Since her job transfer to England, she’s hidden her attraction to the much younger ‘Boy Toys’. Three days virtually alone with them will be no fantasy and might instead be an embarrassing disaster. But… Thirty-six year old Jennica thought this was her last chance to have a baby when her boyfriend dumped her. Lovers Alec Russert and Kevin Cosby decide to help her out of her predicament. But, they’re the ones in for a shock when Jennica tells them they may be too tame for her sexual likes as she is a submissive and loves to be bound and spanked by her master. Soon they realise they really are much more than ‘Best Mates’. Sadie and Will are vampires who have ‘The Wager’ based on a weekly billiards game they play. Their stakes are always sexual and this week will be no different. But for this week’s wager they decide to include a couple of their friends, Dave and Tony, in the payoff. She loved the ménage that her lover Michael Collins had introduced her to, but now here they were, spending a week at Duncan MacLaughlin’s cottage in Scotland and Holly Martin wasn’t sure she was ready for the surprise he promised her. No details, just a wide grin. The surprise turned out to be ‘Four Play’. When Jon’s father dies in faraway India, the Priscilla and Johnathan travel to his isolatedtea plantation to settle his affairs. Left alone while Jon struggles to complete the final harvest, Priscilla realises how much she misses his touch. The charismatic Anil Kumar enchants both Priscilla and Jon with his god-like beauty and charm bringing them to a ‘Monsoon Fever’
